Newsguard 2.0

This is the second incarnation of Newsguard, the service that finds relevant news for you by making use of email alert technology. This is a relaunch of the over 10 year old Newsguard service.

With Newsguard 2.0 we offer a free medical news service with 2 intentions:

  1. to provide members of the general public that want to stay in the know about a medical issue regarding themselves or one of their relatives with relevant news.
  2. help the medical community stay up-to-date by sending them timely new information regarding professional issues that interest them most.

Newsguard 1.0

Newsguard 1.0 launched in the year 2000, as one of the first online news collectors. People with a specific interest could be informed about the latest news regarding their subject of interest. The initial service covered a range of subjects, from sports to finance, from science to business, from entertainment to internet technology.

In the early days of the 21st century, the Newsguard search engine was very well received, was referenced in books on innovative Internet technology, has been described as one of the 50 best sites to use in 2001 by Elsevier, received several "website of the day" and "website of the month" awards and attracted tens of thousands of subscribers from over 40 countries. We never thought about a business model though, but just focused on a "useful product".

After the internet bubble burst, we all had to go back to our day jobs to make a living. For almost a decade we just kept the website and engine up-and-running at the lowest cost possible and did not make many improvements or changes.

From 1.0 to 2.0

Early 2009 we decided to put new energy into the Newsguard project. Because we learned during the early years that most subscribers were interested in medical topics, we decided to focus the service on medical news sources. Over the years we received many requests to make the service more specific for this area of interest.

With the new Newsguard 2.0 we (hopefully) offer an even more useful tool to dessiminate medical knowledge to people who need to know.

Newsguard on the one hand respects the rights of publishers and journalists, on the other hand we endorse the philosophy of the public library of science (www.plos.org): scientific medical information should be freely available.

The Newsguard service is funded by display advertisement, donations and sponsoring. The Newsguard service and technology can also be licensed by brand owners. Please have a look at the Support us page to see how you can help us further develop the Newsguard service.
